最近日本でも見かけるようになったアドベントカレンダー
１２月１日からクリスマスの日まで１枚のカレンダーに小さな小窓がついていて、
チョコなどちょっとしたご褒美が入っています。
欧米ではクリスマスの行事としてポピュラーなアドベントカレンダーについてイギリス出身のマイク先生が寄稿してくれました。

クリスマスの時期がもうすぐ来ます!
クリスマスまで指折り日にちを数えながら待っている方もいるでしょう。
みんなをクリスマスにワクワクさせる素晴らしい方法の一つは、家にアドベントカレンダーを置くことです。
【アドベントとは？クリスマスマス前の準備期間】
アドベントとはいったい何でしょう？また、アドベントカレンダーはいつ始まったのでしょうか?
アドベントはラテン語の「adventus」に由来し、「来る」または「到着」を意味し、クリスマスの４週前の日曜日からクリスマスイブまでの時期の事を指します。
この時期は長い間、キリスト教徒にとってはイエス・キリストの誕生日を迎えるための断食と熟考の時期でした。現在では主にクリスマスの始まりに備えて家と心を準備することに重点が置かれ ています 。

小さなフラップを開けて毎日チョコレートやキャンディを少しずつ手に入れられるカレンダーのアイデアは、19世紀のドイツで始まりました。
ドイツのプロテスタントのキリスト教徒は、クリスマスまでの日々をチョークで壁に印をつけ、クリスマスが近づくにつれて毎日を消していました。
やがて、あるクリエイティブな母親が、クリスマスを楽しみに毎日見せる24枚のカラフルな写真が載ったカレンダーをデザインしました。このアイデアは人気を博し、間もなく企業が 小さな扉やフラップ付きのカレンダーを作り始め、中にキャンディやチョコレート、さらにはジュエリーも入っていきました。

最近では、あらゆる形やサイズのアドベントカレンダーが手に入ります。
木製の小さな家、紙製や布製のもの、スマホのデジタルアプリまで様々です。
まだ持っていないなら、買いに行っても遅くはありません。あるいは、自分で作ることもできます。
ダウンロードして切り取れるテンプレートはたくさんあります。
日本ではカルディコーヒーなどの輸入食品を扱っているお店で手に入ります。
自分だけのアドベントカレンダーを見つけて、クリスマスを楽しみにしましょう。

Advent Calendars
Christmas time is coming soon! Have you been counting the days until Christmas? One great way to get everyone excited for Christmas is to have an Advent Calendar in your home.
What is Advent and when did Advent Calendars begin? Advent comes from the Latin word ‘adventus’ which means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. For a long time, it was a time of fasting and reflection for Christians in preparation of Jesus Christ’s birthday. Nowadays, Advent is mainly about preparing the home and heart for the beginning of Christmas. It runs from the fourth Sunday before Christmas up until Christmas Eve.
The idea of having a calendar with little flaps that you could open and get a little piece of chocolate or candy each day began in Germany in the 19th century. German Protestant Christians would mark a wall with chalk to represent the days until Christmas and they would erase each day as it got closer to Christmas. Eventually, one creative mother designed a calendar that had 24 colorful pictures on it that you could reveal each day in anticipation for Christmas. The idea became popular and it wasn’t too long before companies started producing calendars with small doors and flaps that contained candy, chocolate, or even jewelry within.
These days, you can get Advent Calendars in all shapes, sizes, and materials. They range from little houses to digital apps on your phones and are often made from wood or paper. If you are feeling creative, you could even make your own calendar. There are lots of templates out there to download, cut out, and glue together.
Check out your local imported food store such as Kaldi coffee and get excited for Christmas.
